The Russian public opinion has long held a view of the Russian state's early New Age (second half of the 15th - end of the 17th century) military service as something archaic, primitive and backward. The vivid image of a Moscow man of war, dreaming of serving the sovereign without taking his sword out of its sheath, formed in the time of Peter the Great, made an indelible impression on subsequent generations of Russian historians, who disparagingly assessed the level of development of Russian military science of the Moscow era. Meanwhile, such pejorative assessments are in clear contradiction with the historical reality. For two and a half centuries, from the middle of XV to the end of XVII century, the Russian state has achieved in the foreign policy field of considerable success: not only conquered three Tatar "kingdoms", defeated in a two-hundred-year war Polish-Lithuanian state, but also became an empire. To achieve such impressive successes, without having at its disposal a reliable and effective "the last argument of kings" - a good, combat-ready troops and the appropriate level of development of military affairs - would be impossible. But what was this very "last argument" of the Moscow sovereigns, thanks to which they were able to achieve such impressive successes? This question is answered by the book of Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor V.V. Pensky, which tells about the history of the Moscow sovereigns. Pensky, which tells about what was the Russian military business of the second half of the XV - early XVII century, when it was created, was tested in numerous battles and campaigns of the Moscow military machine. This study is not about battles, but about the history of military affairs: the size of the sovereign's army, the peculiarities of its structure and management, logistics, military finance, tactics and strategy, siege work, armament and much more.
