Book 1.
The monograph is devoted to the history of the formation of visual ideas about the "ideal Russian" and their representations in the domestic culture of the period of the formation of national/imperial ideology in the Russian Empire: images, stereotypes and ways of embodying Russianness. The author analyzes a wide range of images in texts of various genres, which reflect the features and attributes of Russianness, paying attention primarily to the external manifestations of the nationally specific and its attributes. The focus is on the methods of constructing the Russian national costume, created on the basis of traditional folk and historical clothing, and its invariants in official uniforms, masquerade Russian costume and patriotic fashion. A separate section analyzes the reasons for the popularity of court balls "in the Russian style" of the 1880-1900s and their connection with the utopian projects of the last Romanov. The article examines anthropoesthetic representations in Russian science, types of female Russian beauty and popularization of such images, as well as the controversy about adequate representation of Russian identity at international art and industrial exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century.
Book 2.
The book is a continuation of the monograph “Visual representations of Russianness in the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. Appearances – guises – vestments” (Moscow, 2024), dedicated to the history of ideas about Russian identity and national appearance, as well as the problems of designing a Russian national costume during the period of imperial nation-building. The center of this study is the process of formation of anthropomorphic personification of Russia in a feminine guise over two centuries (18th – early 20th centuries). The evolution of the image of Russia is revealed in a complex of pictorial sources of various types (engravings, cartouches, conclusions, fireworks, magazine illustrations and caricatures, monument projects, banknotes, coronation allegorical canvases, sculptures, drawings, medals, advertisements and posters, postcards, etc.). The tendencies of the formation of several types of visual embodiments of Russia (Mother Russia, warrior maiden, sovereign Russia, etc.), their transformations in various genres are shown, and the interaction of feminine representations of Russia with anthropomorphic images of Mother Moscow in the 19th century is analyzed.
