Tatsuo Hori is a recognized classic of Japanese literature, still little known to the Russian reader. His impressionistic prose was highly valued by Yasunari Kawabata, while Hori himself considered himself a student and follower of Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
The writer's main works - "The Wind Rises", "A Beautiful Village", "Naoko", "The House Under the Elms" - were created between 1925 and 1946, when the literary life of Japan was distinguished by a variety of creative trends, and the influence of Western civilization and the resulting rethinking of the national tradition gave rise to an atmosphere of constant philosophical search in the intellectual environment. This atmosphere and the tragic circumstances of Tatsuo Hori's personal life predetermined his heightened attention to the finiteness of human existence, the meaning, value and beauty of life. The refined aestheticism of his prose serves as a way to ask very difficult questions without saying them out loud. At the same time, among Hori's works there are things so filled with love for the world around us that any thought of death melts away without a trace in the sparkling delight of earthly existence.
Most of the works included in this collection are published in Russian for the first time.
