Over half a century of writing, British detective author René Brabazon Raymond (1906–1985) published nearly ninety crime novels and used several pen names. The most celebrated of these was James Hadley Chase. "I'm like a bloodhound, following a scent and sensing what the reader wants. And what he'll buy," the master explained the success of his novels, readily revealing his golden secret: readers are drawn to "action and rhythm." The 20th century saw no room left for leisurely, old-fashioned stories in which an eccentric detective investigates the mysterious murder of an aristocrat in the setting of a cozy country mansion; by the laws of the modern era, the detective uses a revolver almost as often as he uses deduction.

The collection includes the novels "Mallory" (1950) and "Springtime in Paris" (1951), whose protagonist, Martin Corridon, is a former British Secret Service agent, former spy, former commando, now a typical "soldier of fortune," working for the highest bidder. World War II has recently ended. Corridon is eager to retire, but once again finds himself drawn into a whirlwind of events that promises both the opportunity for a lucrative windfall and the threat of mortal danger.
