The collection of documents is dedicated to one of the most important episodes of the modern history of the Cold War period of the second half of the 20th century — the meeting of the leaders of the USSR and the USA in Vienna in 1961 — and the various political events that preceded this meeting and were its immediate result. The book publishes a large set of declassified documents from Russian and foreign archives, telling about the complex international problems, against the background of which the negotiations between the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR N. S. Khrushchev and the President of the USA J. F. Kennedy took place, reflecting the specifics of the preparation of the meeting, the complex political behind-the-scenes struggle around it, the mechanism for developing and making decisions by the top Soviet leadership on the most important foreign policy issues both on the eve of the negotiations in Vienna and after their completion. The collection was prepared by the Russian State Archive of Modern History, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the Study of the Consequences of Wars and the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of a joint Russian-Austrian research project. The collection is intended for specialists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in modern political history.
