The Leningrad school of science fiction gave the genre many famous names. Georgy Martynov, Ilya Varshavsky, Vadim Shefner, Alexander Shalimov... But one of them really stands out, and not because its owner is a woman. Olga Larionova suddenly lit up the science fiction scene so brightly in the mid-sixties that she instantly found a huge circle of admirers. We are talking about "The Leopard from the Top of Kilimanjaro" - a novel that, according to online experts, "is not just considered one of Larionova's best books - perhaps it can be safely added to the treasury of world science fiction. If the writer had been American, she would have certainly won the Hugo or Nebula awards (or maybe even both)." She was not published often, but almost every one of the writer's works that came out in those times when science fiction was stingy (the sixties - eighties) was a direct hit on target - that is, in the hearts of readers.
The "Crown Kreg" cycle, which began with the story "Chakra Centaur", was written for a long time, about twenty years. The story, conceived as a joke, turned into a full-fledged "space opera" - a kind of worthy response to the "star king" Hamilton. Travels in the Universe in the stories and novels of the cycle are combined with a romantic fairy tale, where there are knightly tournaments, and robots, and fantastic flying creatures - kregs, through whose eyes people see the world around them. But most importantly, the stories told in the books of the cycle are characterized by that special humanity that distinguishes Larionova's work from most of her colleagues.
