This edition of the diaries of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich covers the first five and a half years of his presidency of the Imperial Academy of Sciences - from May 1889 to the end of 1894. Having received such a high and responsible position, Konstantin Konstantinovich immediately began to participate in all the affairs of the Academy of Sciences: the diaries for this period describe details of both the external, official, and internal life of the Academy of Sciences and the institutions subordinate to it. In April 1891, Konstantin Konstantinovich became the commander of the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment, and his diaries reflect the regimental life of this one of the oldest regiments of the Russian army. The Grand Duke does not forget the Life Guards Izmailovsky Regiment, where he previously commanded a company: he continues to attend the Izmailovsky leisure events that he had previously organized, where he reads poetry and participates in the production of plays.
Service, civil and military, is far from the only thing that can interest the reader in the diaries of Konstantin Konstantinovich. These diaries are, on the one hand, a story about high society, with a description of receptions and balls, and on the other hand, a cross-section of the cultural life of society, because the Grand Duke was fond of literature, music and theater, as did many educated people of his time. He read books that were in fashion, attended new drama and opera performances, commented on articles from the latest newspapers and magazines. All this, along with personal, creative and family experiences, was reflected in his diaries. The book is intended both for specialists studying scientific, secular, cultural life in Russia in the last quarter of the 19th century, and for a wide range of readers interested in Russian history.
