"And we distinguished Empire from Baroque, just as you at that age distinguished firs from pines," the poet wrote, as if apologizing. Ippolitov doesn't apologize; he's an art historian, he's supposed to be. He does his job: he discusses art—and so engagingly that it becomes clear where the current museum boom, for example, or the suddenly wildly popular architectural walks, came from. Whatever the specific topic, his writing is compelling, beautiful, and meaningful. Incredibly subtle and intelligent. You want to immediately join in, grease your heels, and run to the museum... You want to see the world through his eyes. "And the world will again appear strange, shrouded in a colorful fog." And he achieves this with words. In an age of total smartphone visuality, you suddenly realize how much you yearn for words, how much you miss them, and yet in the beginning, there was the word... It's no wonder that he's an art historian, and therefore writes specifically about the visual. Reading it is a pleasure, somewhat forgotten: belles lettres, in its purest form.
