Among the numerous publications devoted to the Arabian Peninsula, the History of Saudi Arabia, in its first and subsequent editions in Russian, Arabic, and English, occupies a unique place. It covers the evolution of Saudi society from about the middle of the 18th century to the third decade of the 21st century. In addition to the historical narrative, the author explores, inter alia, the ideology and movement of the Wahhabi (Salafi) reformers, who called themselves "monotheists"; the various stages of development of the Saudi state; the role of the "oil factor" in the transformation of Saudi society; the emergence of new classes and social groups; the role of Saudi Arabia in the international arena, its relations with Russia; and the serious reforms of recent years.
The book is based on a variety of sources. These include Arabic chronicles, including the original Arabian chronicles written by both supporters and opponents of the Saudis and Wahhabis; accounts by European travelers, diplomats, scholars, and spies from the 18th to the 20th centuries; documents and publications of the British administration; and documents and publications of the Saudi administration. Documents and publications of the British administration in India; original Arabic sources of the 20th century, including not only official Saudi publications, but also notes by participants in the events described; works by prominent American, European and Russian scholars; and Russian archival materials, many of which have been brought into the scientific circulation for the first time.
