The monograph is devoted to the life and work of Wang Yang-ming (王陽明, or Wang Shou-zhen 王守仁, 1472-1529), one of the greatest Chinese philosophers, the creator of the original doctrine of the "doctrine of the heart" (心學 xin-sue), an outstanding writer, military leader, and statesman. His philosophy formed the basis of all the most developed forms of Neo-Confucianism in China and neighboring countries, especially in Japan, where it became the leading spiritual current in the period preceding the Meiji Restoration (1868-1869). Today in China, Wang Yang-min's ideas and image have gained extraordinary popularity, and he himself is perceived as an outstanding representative of Chinese culture, a statesman and educator who created an internationally significant doctrine. The monograph shows the dramatic vicissitudes of his life and ideological legacy, ranging from spiritual leadership and canonization to prohibition and desecration. It details the treatment of Wang Yang-ming's personality and work in the PRC, especially in recent times, when he has been transformed from a silenced persona non grata into a highly vaunted, widely studied, and frequently published cult figure with sacred places in memorials and research centers in his hometown in Shaoxing (in Zhejiang Province) and in Guiyang (the capital of Guizhou Province), where he served his exile. This research and textual work, in addition to the most complete description and analysis of the teachings of Wang Yang-ming and his closest followers in the Ming era (1368-1644), contains the first commented translation from the ancient Chinese written-literary language Wen-yan of the most important first part of his main work - "Chuan-si lu" (傳習錄 "Records of the taught and perceived").
