Joseph Vladimirovich Gessen was a politician, publisher, journalist, lawyer, a well-known person in the society of the early twentieth century, characterized by diverse interests - he was a member of the Central Committee of the Constitutional Democratic Party, an executive officer of the Ministry of Justice, a deputy of the Second State Duma, editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper "Rech", the mouthpiece of the Kadets, and the liberal journal "Pravo", he was exiled in the North of Russia, served in the judiciary in the provinces. He socialized with ministers, revolutionaries, major politicians, famous writers, artists, actors... And in exile he prepared and published a multi-volume "Archive of the Russian Revolution", preserving for posterity testimonies and documents.
The turning events of Russian history were not just unfolding before his eyes, he was a participant in them. And when I. V. Gessen decided to write his memoirs, summarizing his life, he had something to tell about. But only to assess the fiasco that his party suffered in 1917, he could not. However, an honest account of the past itself gives an answer to the question of why the cadets were "thrown off the ship of history".
