In an unnamed country, an economic crisis hit, unemployment soared, and a dictator rose to power with a simple solution: he banned women from working, lest they take jobs from men. A woman's place is at home, where she's supposed to bear children and care for her husband, right?

For three decades, half the country's population has lived without raising their heads. Most women are condemned to be silent appendages to men, regularly producing children. Some are still required to work, but they're assigned only hard, dirty work that men won't agree to, and they're declared not even second-class citizens, but third-class citizens. All these years, women have been raised accordingly—from childhood, they've been told they're good for nothing else—but some refuse to succumb to this brainwashing. And now, thirty years later, several disenfranchised working women, under cover of darkness in the basement of an abandoned building, are preparing for an uprising one of them has been planning for years, while the secret police search for them throughout the city...

Margaret O'Donnell (1932–2019) was an Irish women's rights activist and a key participant in the movement to legalize contraception in Ireland. Her dystopian novel, The Hive, which anticipated Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale by five years, is O'Donnell's only novel, a classic of feminist literature, undeservedly forgotten for decades. It is only now returning to us and, alas, still resonates with great relevance. This novel explores how change is painful, but possible and inevitable, and how the fierce dream of one woman for justice can awaken hundreds of thousands of others and push the world toward change.
