The book "Counteroffensive" is the third part of a large-scale study of the now forgotten Ukrainian War of the XVI-XVII centuries. The events traced in it unfold in the middle and second half of the 16th century over a vast area from the Baltic States, Lithuania and Smolensk to Moldavia, Crimea, the Precaucasus and the Volga region. In the middle of this space, Galicia and Volyn, Kiev and Seversk land, as well as the Wild Field up to the Black Sea region, the war pulled together into a single region - Ukraine, central to the future of Eastern Europe. Armed struggle for the division of this region and dominance in it from the beginning of the XVI century was led by Poland and Russia; by the end of the century Turkey and Sweden joined the struggle. In pursuit of military superiority, their armies changed rapidly - and these countries themselves changed unrecognizably, transforming from loose empires and federations into cohesive military states. The book traces all the significant battles and clashes of armies in Eastern Europe in the second half of the 16th century, shows the formation of multispecies mass armies, the emergence of national schools of military organization and combat, and reveals the emergence of innovative military ideas, such as the operational level of campaigns and dominance at sea, which would define the rules of armed struggle until the middle of the 20th century. The process of military construction is linked to changes in the structure of states, to the strengthening of their mobilization capabilities, and to the breakthrough of expansionist military figures into power. The fates of the main actors of Eastern European history of the second half of the 16th century are traced in the circumstances of state building, ideological struggle and war.
