The Trojan War is often referred to as legendary, as if to doubt its actuality. Indeed, there is no direct evidence for the events Homer recounts in the Iliad and Odyssey. However, there is indirect evidence, including Hittite and Egyptian texts that allow us to draw some conclusions, and there is the obvious fact that Homer was addressing an audience for whom the names of Achilles, Odysseus, Hector, and other heroes of the Trojan War were clearly not empty words. This suggests that stories about the events at Troy existed before Homer, and he merely transformed them into artistic form. So what did Alexander Kravchuk do? He constructed the events of the Trojan War and the fates of its heroes, drawing on Homer's poems and surviving fragments of works by other ancient authors, as well as on the achievements of modern historical scholarship. The result is a gripping narrative that finds room for bold hypotheses and answers to many questions.

Alexander Kravchuk (1922–2023) was a classicist and professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
