St. Cyril of Alexandria (375-444) was a great holy father of the Orthodox Church, who became famous primarily for his dogmatic achievements in the field of Christology and his refutation of the heresy of Nestorius in 429-431. However, the scope of his work was much broader, and he is also known as a profound exegete of Scripture. Among his New Testament exegetical works, the most famous is his "Commentary on the Gospel of John," which is offered to the reader. This work was written, as it is supposed, before 429 A.D. and contains 12 books in which, in addition to interpreting this "mystery-seeing" Evangelist and explaining the profound mysteries of the Divine Domesticity of salvation and the Incarnation of God, the saint polemizes with various heresies.
This interpretation, which is a masterpiece of Old Church saintly exegetics, was translated into Russian by the famous Russian church scholar-biblical scholar, professor of the Moscow Theological Academy Mitrofan Dmitrievich Muretov (1851-1917).
