Selim was not supposed to become a sultan. Being killed at the moment of his elder brother’s accession to the throne was all he, the third and not very favorite son of his father, could expect in accordance with the unwritten laws of Ottoman succession. And their father, Bayezid I, was in no hurry to vacate the throne…

Today, the largest mosque in Istanbul and the newest bridge across the Bosphorus, connecting Europe and Asia, are named after Selim. The sultan, who was called the Shadow of God on Earth, turned the Ottoman Empire into a decisive force in world politics in the 16th century, almost doubling its territory and gaining control over the entire Eastern Mediterranean in just eight years of rule.

In his book, Yale University professor Alan Mikhail shows the true, traditionally understated, role of the Ottoman Empire during Selim’s time in shaping the world as we know it. Without the Ottomans, the author argues – or rather without the fear they inspired in Europeans – the Reformation might not have happened, and even Columbus might not have set sail across the Atlantic. This book proposes to reconsider Western-centric ideas about history and look at it from the East.
