The memoirs presented in the book belong to the pen of an undeservedly forgotten prominent statesman of the Russian Empire. Prince Vsevolod Nikolaevich Shakhovskoy held the post of Minister of Trade and Industry from February 1915 to February 1917. In his memoirs, he vividly and informatively describes his studies at the Naval School and his subsequent career - service in the Guards Crew, the Ministry of Finance, the Main Directorate of Merchant Shipping and Ports, the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Railways.
V. N. Shakhovskoy paid special attention to his activities as the head of the trade and industrial department during the First World War, when he, as a member of the Council of Ministers, was directly involved in solving not only the most important economic, but also domestic and foreign policy problems.
The breadth of the thematic range of the memoirs is complemented by the accuracy and subtlety of the characteristics given by the memoirist to those contemporaries with whom he had the opportunity to communicate. They were Nicholas II, representatives of the imperial family, ministers and officials, financial, trade and industrial and public figures.
The memoirs of V. N. Shakhovsky, published in Russia for the first time, are accompanied by commentaries that supplement these memoirs to the extent that their content reflects the absence of the emigrant memoirist's pre-revolutionary personal archive.
