The father of Russian judicial rhetoric, Fyodor Plevako, is rightfully considered one of the finest lawyers in the Russian Empire. Thanks to his keen intellect and exceptional eloquence, Plevako won over two hundred cases, including many where the defense had virtually no chance of winning. His clients included people of all social classes, from princes to peasants. He became renowned for his participation in the major political and criminal trials of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He knew how to stir the hearts of jurors and find the right words to sway their opinions.

Plevako's striking display of professionalism and oratorical skill was made possible not only by his education at the Faculty of Law at Moscow University, but also by the judicial reform of 1864, which established jury trials and the new positions of attorneys-at-law. It was in this field that the star of the "Moscow golden-tongued" Fyodor Plevako rose. His speeches—vivid, logical, and witty—are still used as teaching aids for law students and remain an important part of Russia's humanitarian heritage.
