The outstanding Russian thinker Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev is known as the author of the drive theory of ethnogenesis. Introducing the concept of “passionarity”, he distinguished in it opposites: religious aspirations and virtues, sacrifice leading to holiness, and vices, in particular – passion based on selfishness. The scientist argued that a person in his activity is guided not by ideas, but ideals, attitude to the surrounding world. He put forward the principle of bipolarity of the ethnosphere and applied it to religious studies, grouping religious systems on the principle of relation to nature and the surrounding world. He singled out the concept of “antisystem”, understanding the systemic integrity of people with a negative attitude, seeking to simplify natural and social systems, to reduce the density of systemic connections. A unique course of lectures by Lev Gumilev, published on the basis of the scientist’s audio archive, gives an idea of a wide range of his scientific researches and original generalizations. He wasn't a desk scientist - he was a great lecturer. Possessing a wide range of nuances of the Russian language and an excellent knowledge of human nature, he could scientifically, but at the same time briefly and clearly state his theory for representatives of any social stratum and age. His scientific lectures and seminars were widely available, extremely popular in the 1980s, and held in crowded rooms.
