Igor Nikolaevich Sukhikh (b. 1952) is a doctor of philological sciences, professor at St. Petersburg University, writer, and critic. He is the author of more than 500 scientific works on the history of Russian literature of the XIX-XX centuries, including the monographs "Problems of Chekhov's Poetics" (1987, 2007), "Sergei Dovlatov: Time, Place, Fate" (1996, 2006, 2010), "Books of the XX century. Russian Canon" (2001), "Prose of the Soviet Century: Three Fates. Babel. Bulgakov. Zoshchenko" (2012), "Russian Canon. Books of the Twentieth Century" (2012), "From... and to... Etudes on Russian literature" (2015), etc., as well as the three-volume book "Russian Literature for All", which is a favorite of schoolchildren and teachers. The book Structure and Meaning is the result of I. N. Sukhikh's research and teaching experience. It can be put on a par with textbooks on introduction to literary studies, but it has at least three significant differences. Firstly, this book is interesting to read, not only to learn from it; secondly, it successfully combines theory and practice: the section "Illustrations" contains articles devoted to private questions of literary studies; and thirdly, despite the academic nature of its presentation, the book is addressed to the widest range of readers.
