Passions are diseases of the soul. Sorrow and the struggle with it. Patristic teaching and modern practice.

Sorrow is often recognized as an unimportant and unthreatening passion, but St. Neil of Sinai warns: "Sorrow is a disease of soul and body; it takes the soul captive, and dries up the flesh, leaving it in place.
The proposed book contains instructions of the holy fathers of the Church not only on the passion of sorrow, but also on the following important issues of the spiritual life: on the will of God and the human will, on trust in God, on the need to fulfill the Gospel commandments, and on the need for guidance in the spiritual life. All these topics are interwoven into the first one in a limited way, because they teach the right way to deal with sorrow. Their inseparable connection is shown in the Appendix, which contains simple examples from contemporary life that will allow even the new Christian to internalize the material. Like a textbook, this book will teach the reader how to recognize and overcome sorrow.
