Michael Chodarkovsky's book tells of the clash of two worlds - the centralized Russian state and the nomads of the Eurasian steppe. In three hundred years, Russia managed to turn the dangerous steppe frontiers into part of the empire. The author describes the history of the region not only from Moscow's point of view, he shows that the steppe peoples perceived Russia first as a subject state, then as an ally and eventually as a dominant power. According to the author, Russia's steady expansion in the southern and eastern lands turned Russia into a colonial empire, although the colonial nature of its power was emphatically denied. Michael Chodarkovsky is a professor in the Department of History at Loyola University (Chicago, USA) who has devoted his work to the history of the peoples of the southeastern regions of the Russian Empire and Russian policy toward them.
