Theodore Shanin (1930–2020) was a prominent British sociologist, professor at the University of Manchester, a recognized authority in peasant studies, historical sociology and informal economics. He founded one of the first private universities in post-Soviet Russia – the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences (unofficial name “Shaninka”). Aiming to integrate the Russian intellectual tradition into the international scientific community, he played an important role in the development of new forms of academic education in modern Russia.
Biography of T. Shanin is striking even by the standards of the turbulent XX century: he was born in the city of Vilna, which was then part of Poland, as a child he survived the Second World War, after the accession of Lithuania to the USSR he was exiled with his mother to Altai, then to Samarkand. His younger sister and beloved grandfather died in the ghetto.
After a long journey, he and his parents were able to travel to Poland and then to France. In 1948, attributing to his 17 extra two years, he volunteered to fight for the creation of Israel. After graduating from the University of Jerusalem, he moved to the UK, where he pursued a successful academic career. Autobiography for Theodore himself occupied an important place among his scientific works: the author examines his dramatic personal experience of the past century from a philosophical point of view, exploring what he would call the metaphysics of fate.
