The outstanding medieval philologist, poetry scholar, theorist and historian of literature Boris Isaakovich Yarkho (1889–1942) began working on this book in the summer of 1918, during a period when the very atmosphere of post-war Europe was permeated with eschatological sentiments. The context of such a large-scale catastrophe made it relevant to turn to the genre of visions, the purpose of which, according to the author, is “to reveal to the reader truths inaccessible to direct human knowledge.” The anthology of medieval Latin visions, translated and commented on by B. Yarkho, helped introduce the definition of this genre into scientific circulation, to outline its boundaries, chronology and main content.
The book ends with an index of images and motifs compiled by the author, which includes, among other things, numerous examples of the genre of visions that were not included in the anthology. In total, the visions collected by B. Yarkho not only help to reconstruct the picture of the world of medieval man, but also give an idea of the possibilities of the genre, which in its development led European literature to Dante’s Divine Comedy and Langland’s Vision of Peter the Plowman.
