Raffaello Giovagnoli is a philologist, historian and writer; an active participant in the Risorgimento, the movement for the reunification of Italy. He has written a number of research works on the history of this movement. Giovagnoli's works of fiction include a series of historical novels from the life of ancient Rome, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Spartacus, published in 1874.
The first volume of this edition presents the beginning of this novel, in which Giovagnoli, in the words of Giuseppe Garibaldi, described "not the best, but the most brilliant period of the history of the greatest republic - a period when the haughty rulers of the world were beginning to wallow in the mire of vice and debauchery, but, despite the fact that this generation was exhausted by corruption and decay, it gave birth to giants, the equal of which had not been in any of the previous generations, in any nation and in any era". The second volume of this edition contains the ending of the novel Spartacus, which tells the story of the largest slave revolt in history; of its leader, a man of outstanding physical strength and spirit; of beautiful and dramatic love; of friendship and betrayal; of the joy of struggle and the bitterness of defeat. The memory of Spartacus has helped many generations to maintain unwavering fortitude when it comes to fighting for the great cause of freedom. Richly illustrated exclusive gift edition in hardcover with gold and blint embossing, three-sided colored trim and silk lasso.
