This is a book about the fish owl, one of the largest owls in the world. And it is a book about Russia by an American. The feathered giant settles in virgin forests close to water bodies rich in fish, and just such conditions can still be found in the Russian Primorye in the Far East. That's why it was here that budding ornithologist Jonathan Slat met the mysterious and rare bird - an encounter that changed the scientist's life.
Together with his Russian colleagues, Slat sets off in search of fish owls in order to develop a plan to save the endangered species. Frosty nights with duty in tents, crazy snowmobile races on the melting river ice, hopes and luck, unfortunate mistakes await them. The main characters of the book - fish owls: dexterous hunters, devoted parents, performers of mesmerizing duets - it is impossible not to love them after the author. There are also "secondary" characters - people accustomed to survive in the harsh conditions of taiga forests. Many things in Russia are strange to an American, and this gives a special flavor to the stories about the everyday life of field researchers and about the (often inappropriately) hospitable inhabitants of Primorsky Krai. Dramatic and lyrical scenes, apt and ironic observations - everything in the narrative is subordinated to the idea of the beauty and vulnerability of wild nature.
