Ivan Shmelev (1873–1950) entered literature as an "artist of the dispossessed" and became the "most Russian" of émigré writers. Expressing the "profound truth" about Russia, he created an image of it, purified of its randomness, and imbued with a higher meaning and faith.

The story "The Inexhaustible Chalice" (1919), presented in this edition, tells the poignant story of a serf artist, through whose life Shmelev explores the themes of spiritual quest, the power of art, and faith. The epic "The Sun of the Dead" (1922) recounts the tragic events of the Civil War. This book brought the author widespread renown throughout Europe. Transcending the boundaries of national literature, Shmelev's work acquired universal significance; he was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and his works have been translated into dozens of languages.
