The VK Bookshelf is a collaboration series between Eksmo and VK, in which well-known works of Russian and foreign classic literature will be published with illustrations by members of creative VKontakte public groups.
We begin with Mikhail Bulgakov's novella "Heart of a Dog." 2025 marks the centenary of its writing.
Professor Philipp Philippovich Preobrazhensky, renowned throughout Moscow, conducts an experiment to humanize a stray dog named Sharik. The initial apparent success soon turns into a real disaster. The patient absorbs the worst traits of his donor, the drunkard and hooligan Klim Chugunkin, and begins to actively integrate into the new social order...
Mikhail Bulgakov's novella "Heart of a Dog" was written in 1925, during the heyday of the New Economic Policy (NEP) and eugenics, with all its biological oddities, such as experiments in rejuvenation and crossbreeding. The spirit of the times dictated fantastical plots to the writer, but zealous Soviet censors disapproved of Bulgakov's humor and blocked the publication of this "pamphlet on communism and the creation of a new man."
The work was first officially published in the USSR in 1987 and immediately attracted the attention of filmmakers and theater professionals.
In our digital age, creators of creative VK public pages have also turned to "Heart of a Dog" as a source of inspiration.
The following contributed to this art publication: VELLY, Ronysan, Alexandra Melekhova, Anastasia Kudryashova, Veronika Yakimenko, Natalia Zhadan, Evgenia Khimchenko, Evdokia Do, Yulia Alm, Svetlana Saffo, Anastasia Shamsudinova, Maria Boyko, Zhuravlik, and Natalia Larionova.
