This collection of works by the world-famous Russian classicist F. M. Dostoevsky includes one of his early stories - "A Square Anecdote", in which characteristic techniques and features of the writer's style are already visible, as well as the famous story "White Nights", in which the prototype of the main character is Dostoevsky himself. The book is decorated with illustrations by two artists of the first half of the XX century - Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky and Yuri Pavlovich Annenkov.
F. M. Dostoevsky wrote the story "A Square Anecdote" before the appearance of his most famous major novels. For the first time this satirical and largely grotesque work was published in 1862. It already shows characteristic techniques and features of Dostoevsky's style, the rudiments of all his subsequent images and ideas, including the theme of "little people", so characteristic of him. In "Bad Anecdote," the writer emphasizes how much the actions of "business people" and the ideals they proclaim diverge from the principles of humanism. One of such "little people", a lonely and timid dreamer is the protagonist of Dostoevsky's famous story "White Nights". He cannot fit into the real world and therefore goes into the realm of dreams and unfulfilled fantasies. In this story, Dostoevsky demonstrates his talent as a writer by subtly and skillfully "anatomizing the poor human heart". The writer long polished the final text of this story, the atmosphere of which makes one remember both "The Bronze Horseman" and Pushkin's "The House in Kolomna". "White Nights" has been repeatedly screened both in Russia and abroad. This story has become one of Dostoevsky's landmark works.
