Marie Corelli was the pen name of the English writer Mary Mackay (1855–1924). Her novel The Sorrows of Satan (1895) became one of the most significant literary events of the Victorian era. It was a resounding success, breaking all possible sales records. When critics attacked the writer, she was supported by Oscar Wilde, whose novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, written five years earlier, had in many ways anticipated The Sorrows of Satan. Turning to the popular plot of a pact with the devil, Marie Corelli created one of the most ambiguous images of Satan in world literature: a hero who does not desire evil but commits it, tempting people but living in the hope that they will overcome their desires and cease sinning. In her novel Barabbas (1893), the writer turned to the events of the Gospel story. The main character is a criminal named Barabbas, whom Pontius Pilate released at the crowd's request instead of Jesus Christ. Interestingly, the novel's translation into Russian was carried out by personal order of Nicholas II, who held the work in high esteem. Even today, Marie Corelli's novels are deservedly beloved by readers.
