Scandinavian mythology has long been associated with three words: Vikings, Valhalla, and Ragnarok. And each of them is somehow connected to death. Why is it so central to our understanding of the world?

Even the Scandinavian myth of the creation of the universe flows seamlessly into the myth of its end, when Naglfar, a monstrous ship built from the nails of the dead, arrives from the world of the dead. And then begins Ragnarok—the battle that culminates in the death of the gods.

Perhaps these myths hold the key to the Norsemen's resilience and courage: mindful of the finiteness of all things, they never retreat from the threatening face of fate.

Evgenia Gulbis is a graduate of the Institute of Philosophy at the Russian State University for the Humanities, author and host of the podcast "Ratatosk Speaks!", the author of lecture courses on Scandinavian mythology and British theater, and the creator of a Telegram channel about literature and culture. It tells of those who will be carried by the Valkyries to the mead hall of Valhalla to feast with Odin, and of those who will go to the dark halls of Hel.
