The Synopsis of Kiev ("Synopsis, or Brief Collection from Various Chroniclers about the Beginning of the Slavic-Russian People and the First Princes of the God-Saved City of Kiev") is a review of the history of Southwestern Rus', compiled in the second half of the 17th century and published for the first time in 1674 in the printing house of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, and for the last time in Kyiv in 1861. The compilers were presumably the archimandrite of the Lavra, Innocent Gizel, and the economist of the Lavra, Panteleimon Kokhanovsky. In the 18th century, the "Synopsis" was the most widespread historical work in Russia. Traditionally, it is considered one of the important milestones in the formation of the concept of all-Russian unity. The highly reverend Innocent greatly contributed to the reunification of the Ukrainian lands with the Russian state during the difficult years of the Ruin. The work reflected the views of Kyiv scribes who stood at the origins of Russian historiography in the late 17th and 18th centuries. "Synopsis" was a reference book for such important scholars as V. N. Tatishchev and M. V. Lomonosov. Dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the first edition. For the first time, the text is published with a scholarly commentary and an introductory article.
