Women have always been involved in the Latin American drug trade, dating back to the 1920s, when opium was first smuggled into the United States through Mexico. Women became drug smugglers, laboratory workers, and even sicarias (hitmen). Some even became cartel leaders. Women armed with weapons guarded the head of the Medellin Cartel, Pablo Escobar, worked in the Gulf Cartel, and participated in the Sinaloa Cartel, Mexico's largest drug cartel.

The Mara Salvatrucha gang formed its own female hit squads, while the Tijuana Cartel and Los Zetas were considered feminist. Griselda Blanco, the first woman to lead a drug cartel, stood out. A veritable cult following developed around her for many years. It's no surprise that she paved the way for many women to the very top of the criminal hierarchy.
