"The Spy, or a Tale of Neutral Territory" is a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, published in 1821; the second in his creative biography and the first of his novels based on American material.
The action of "The Spy" takes place during the War of Independence. The protagonist is Garvey Birch, a humble American posing as an ordinary peddler in the spread, but in reality gathering military information for the Continental Army in territories controlled by British forces. The novel also features the Wharton family of wealthy landowners who sympathize with the British, but their youngest daughter, Frances, is in love with Major Dunwoody of the Continental Army. At the end of the book, Dunwoody marries Frances, and Birch meets Washington and rejects the reward offered to him. He dies thirty years later in the next war with the British, and Captain Dunwoody (son of the Major and Frances) learns the truth about Birch's activities from a note found with him.
