This work is the first of two devoted to the history of North Africa, covering the chronological period from prehistory to the beginning of the Punic Wars. The narrative centers on Carthage: it successively describes the Punics' neighbors, the origins, culture, and extensive economic expansion of their Phoenician ancestors, the political structure of this city-state, its armed forces, religion, and so on. Following this, it recounts the story of Carthage's centuries-long confrontation with the Greeks, primarily Sicilian, for it was on the lands of this blessed island that two equally equal powers clashed in search of new living space. Drawing on historical sources translated by the author, it recounts in detail the military campaigns of Gelon, Dionysius the Elder, Timoleon, Agathocles—who carried the war to Africa—and Pyrrhus. Exhausted and bled dry by years of fighting, the Carthaginians and Greeks found themselves powerless against the new invader that appeared in Sicily – Rome.
