"The author warns that all scientific propositions in the novel are unproven, unlike everyday facts, which are all fictitious." With this phrase, Mikhail Ancharov introduces what is arguably his finest work, the novel "Boxwood Forest." In fact, this is Ancharov the writer par excellence. For him, the probable is sometimes improbable, the improbable is entirely probable, and the heroes who inhabit his books are restless Don Quixotes and inventors. The theory of improbability, which he developed and applied in his books, unfortunately not taught in universities, is, in our opinion, the most essential of all theories in the world, including Karl Marx's doctrine of surplus value.

It should be added that Ancharov, the writer, is the first Russian bard, and his songs are still remembered and sung. Vladimir Vysotsky, incidentally, considered the bard Ancharov his main teacher. Ancharov also left a significant mark on film: he wrote the screenplay for the film "My Younger Brother," based on Vasily Aksyonov's novella "Star Ticket," and authored the first Russian television series, "Day by Day," which, at the government's behest, was extended to seventeen episodes instead of the planned nine, so popular was it with viewers.

This collection includes the best of Mikhail Ancharov's writing. Again, in our opinion.
