The Rzhev "massacre". The Greatest Battle of the Great Patriotic War

This battle became one of the bloodiest in the history of the Great Patriotic War, but in the Soviet Union it was virtually forgotten. Historians call this grandiose battle, which lasted a total of almost 15 months, the "Verdun" of the Soviet-German front, and front-line soldiers call it the Rzhev "massacre" and the Rzhev "meat grinder" (the pain of the front-line soldiers was best expressed by Tvardovsky in his brilliant poem "I was killed near Rzhev"). The German command considered Rzhev the "cornerstone" of the entire Eastern Front and even the "gateway to Berlin". In terms of its scale, territorial scope, the number of troops involved, duration and losses of both sides, the fighting in the Rzhevsko-Vyazemsky protrusion is on a par with the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of the Caucasus. In total, from January 1942 to March 1943, about half a million soldiers of the Red Army and the Wehrmacht died in the battles near Rzhev. Based on archival documents, the author of this book, which has become a military-historical bestseller, analyzes the reasons for the failure of strategic plans of the Soviet command to encircle and destroy the Army Group "Center", answering the question of why the German troops broke out of the "bag", which was not "tied" by the Red Army. Special attention is paid to the activities of G.K. Zhukov as commander of the Western Front and representative of the VGK Stavka.
