Remembering the heroic feat of our soldiers and officers in the battles for the city of Rzhev, I often ask myself a question: What monument should I erect to those who died in that battle and who remained alive, but who are becoming more and more distant from us every day - from the wounds of long ago, from the fire of the front, from the battle that never ends? What monument should we build for them? Granite and marble do not last long, and the Eternal Flame cannot burn out the pain and those tears and grief from the soul.... We need such a monument to express to all the world, to all the centuries, to all the descendants, to cry, to tell, and admiration, and despair.... And these paths are wide, that never end.... Such a monument, I think, should be the truth, the word of the people, so that from generation to generation of our people passed on the tragedy of the war and the happiness of Victory, the image and spirit of the heroic time of the war, so that our descendants behind the new neighborhoods and squares of the present city of Rzhev saw the streets and alleys sprinkled with the blood of the past war, broken and black from the fires of the walls, broken from shells and bombs land, from which at the cost of the life and blood of our soldiers and officers was swept away by the cruel enemy. Senior Lieutenant E. N. Bassak, communications officer of the Operations Department of the 30th Army Headquarters.
