The ditties are that part of the material collected by I.D. Friedrich that he never approached or prepared for publication, although he had been recording them from the very beginning of the collection (1926-1929). The reason does not seem to be that exile and forced renunciation of folklore studies interfered. As a phenomenon of modern history, ditties could not but yield priority to traditional genres with their stable forms and motifs. It was necessary to sort them out first, and the "cries" could wait. And a pile of records, where ditties alternated with songs, lay and waited for their time.
