Seymour Becker, an American historian who specialized in the history of the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, describes in his work the campaign against the ancient Uzbek khanates of Bukhara and Khiva and the subsequent relations between Russia and these two protectorates. The author shows how the tsarist government was able to preserve a certain political autonomy for the actual enclaves of Russia. But the rapid development of trade and the growth of Russian settlements ended the isolation of the khanates, and when civil war broke out in Khiva during World War I, Russia abandoned its policy of non-interference. This book is also a fascinating study of palace intrigues, ethnic rivalries and economic tensions, and a description of the customs and character of this distinctive area, a crossroads of the ancient East-West route.
