After conquering Gaul in the middle of the first century BC, Julius Caesar undertook two campaigns in Britain (55 and 54 BC). The full conquest of Britain began under Emperor Claudius in 43 CE and was completed by the late 60s. Britain became the northernmost province of the Roman Empire. The southern, eastern and central regions were significantly Romanized, but the north and west of the island were almost untouched. The Romans consolidated their rule with a system of fortified camps and military roads, and in time continuous defensive ramparts were built on the northern borders. The Roman army in Britain numbered about 40,000 men. The crisis of the Roman Empire affected the fate of Britain. From the end of III century began raids of Celtic and Saxon tribes. In the beginning of V century the Roman rule in Britain has stopped. Britain broke up again into a number of independent Celtic areas.
About the fate of the most remote Roman province, its enemies and heroes tells the next book in the series.
