The book is devoted to the perception of the political ideas of Jean Bodin, a French lawyer and political scientist of the 16th century, in the English intellectual community of the 17th century. English political thought in the 17th century repeatedly changed its vector, responding to political crises in the country. Authors of the pre-revolutionary period, the times of the civil war and the Restoration of the Stuarts assessed the theory of sovereignty differently and saw the ways of its implementation in different ways. In this regard, the name of Jean Bodin is found on the pages of the works of English authors quite often, but far from unambiguously. The study attempts to trace the interaction between the texts and their readers, as a result of which the original meanings shift and new ones come to replace them. Numerous examples show that there were two Bodins in the English intellectual field. One was an analyst of state forms of government, the other was a supporter of the doctrine of royal absolutism. English authors, depending on their professional and ideological affiliation, turned to both roles. Bodin's ideas had a certain impact on the English, but they, in turn, as readers, influenced his subsequent image as a supporter of unlimited royal power, which was not revised until the mid-20th century.
