Since its first publication in 1949, the historical dilogy "Ratobortsy" has been reprinted more than twenty times. Having dedicated two decades to studying the period of "adolescence and early youth" of the Russian state, the writer, journalist, and researcher of Old Russian literature Alexei Kuzmich Yugov managed to create expressive, voluminous, and vivid images of two historical figures of unprecedented significance for the history of Rus': Daniil Galitsky and Alexander Nevsky.
During the time of severe trials, princes Daniil Romanovich and Alexander Yaroslavich had to stand at the helm of power: the invasion of the Golden Horde troops marked the beginning of the heavy burden of the yoke, the cruel devastation of settlements, and centuries of bitter dependence. There is also unrest on the western borders, from where the regiments of skilled crusader warriors are advancing... The princes see the good for the Russian land differently, but in the main thing they are united: no matter how many trials are sent down on its long-suffering expanses, "Rus' is strong - it will overcome everything." Yugov's narrative contains a lyrical portrait of the ancient Russian land, the uniqueness of its architecture, the charm of folk poetry, the richness of the language, customs, rites, rituals - knowledge about them is gleaned from many years of studying historical sources. But also - the charm of Russian landscapes, unchanged for centuries, and, in the events of days long gone, echoes of the war, only yesterday experienced by contemporaries.
