"Journey into the Surrounding Worlds of Animals and People" (1934) and "The Theory of Meaning" (1940) are two revolutionary works by the German biologist and natural philosopher Jakob von Uexküll. Their main theses and the concept of the "surrounding world" (Umwelt) introduced by the author formed the basis of biosemiotics.
According to Uexküll, all living beings do not live in a single world, but are subjects around which their own "surrounding worlds" are formed. The author curiously studies the structural features, habitats and behavior of a tick, a mollusk, a dog, each of which perceives reality in its own way. Uexküll acknowledges the limitations of a person's ability to look at the world through the eyes of animals, but calls for attentiveness and insight in order to open the door to the amazing worlds of our smaller brothers.

Journey into the Worlds Around Us and The Theory of Meaning became key texts for posthumanist thought, influenced the ideas of Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Deleuze and Guattari, and remain relevant to this day.
