Fyodor Dostoevsky's Pushkin Speech, delivered on June 8, 1880, at a meeting of the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature in Moscow's Assembly of Nobility, profoundly shook the audience. The original text of the Speech soon became the focus of conflicting interpretations and became the focal point of a fierce ideological struggle, pitting opposing models of Russia's historical development against each other. For some, Dostoevsky's proclaimed Russian "universal humanity" was a utopia, for others, a prophecy. The Speech became the only such event in Russian history. Its "secret," that is, its meaning and significance, has been "unraveled" by critics, writers, philosophers, and researchers for nearly a century and a half. The theme of the Speech remains as relevant to today's Russia, and debates over the country's fate no longer sound like voices from the distant past.

This publication, for the first time, exhaustively collects contemporary reactions to the Speech. These are ego-documents (letters, diaries, memoirs) left by witnesses of a historical event.
