Maximilian Weber (1864-1920) was the greatest German sociologist, the founder of sociology as a science of society, who still influences its development. Why are some states richer and others poorer? Why did Catholic countries, despite their enormous wealth, cease to be the engines of history after the Reformation of the 16th century? And how was this influenced by the religious teachings of Protestants, in which asceticism was bizarrely combined with wealth? M. Weber answers these questions in his seminal and most cited work, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. The author shows us the relationship between Protestant religious values and the "spirit of capitalism", arguing that in countries where such values were dominant, the development of capitalism was faster and easier.
