Started at the end of the XNUMXth century. the struggle for control over the Baltic directly affected the states of the Livonian Confederation, jeopardizing the prospects for its continued existence. Nevertheless, Livonia was protected from invasion by the position of a “crusader state”, under the protection of the pope and the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. In order to expand their own influence in Livonia, the last Jagiellons resorted to actualizing the ancient right of patronage over the Archbishopric of Riga, which asserted them in the status of protectors, which allowed them to interfere in the internal politics of Livonia while maintaining the appearance of preserving their prerogatives. This political and legal concept has undergone a number of significant changes throughout its existence under the influence of the current political situation at that time, in connection with which the history of its emergence, analysis of its original content and subsequent transformation into citizenship relations are an interesting problem.
