Protectors and Conservators. Livonian Policy of the Jagiellons in the 16th Century

The struggle for control of the Baltic, which began in the late 15th century, directly affected the states of the Livonian confederation, jeopardizing the prospects of its further existence. Nevertheless, Livonia was protected from invasion by its position as a "crusader state" under the protection of the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. In order to expand their own influence in Livonia, the latter Jagiellons resorted to actualizing the ancient right of patronage over the Archbishopric of Riga, which confirmed them in the status of protector, allowing them to interfere in the internal politics of Livonia while maintaining the appearance of preserving their prerogatives. This political and legal concept underwent a number of significant changes during its existence under the influence of the political situation of the time, and therefore the history of its origin, the analysis of its original content and its subsequent transformation into a relationship of subjection is an interesting problem.
