Judging by the external outline of events, this is a book about the Great French Revolution: about the web of personal and state intrigues that entangled it and the characters drawn into them; about the intricacies of European diplomacy and the “diamond” in its crown – the secret diplomacy of Catherine the Great. It is more difficult to define the genre of this book, written by a recognized expert in Russian history and a prominent diplomat. This is a painstaking scientific study that literally grew out of the thickness of literature and archival documents (including those previously unknown even to historians!), which, however, reads like a gripping narrative with unexpected endings of events and a series of unraveled and still unraveled mysteries. Therefore, the book can be met with equal success by both professionals and scientists, as well as a wide circle of readers of real literature. And there is another reason for this: surprisingly, the events and heroes of the book, distant from us in time, turn out to be unusually close to today's reader, consonant with his thoughts and experiences. Two centuries later, they seem to directly address our own life experience – the experience of upheaval.
