Vasily Ivanovich Belov (1932–2012) is one of the most beloved authors of "village prose." His life and work were inextricably linked with the Vologda region. He achieved widespread literary recognition in the 1960s with his story "A Habitual Thing," in which he created the unforgettable character of Ivan Afrikanovich—a contemporary of his, a simple village peasant, one of those who sustain the Russian land, akin in spirit to such characters as Tvardovsky's Vasily Terkin or Solzhenitsyn's Ivan Denisovich. The "Vologda Bukhtins' Tall Tales"—fables and tales written down (and perhaps partly invented) by Belov in his native land—address the reader in the voice of a sly buffoon-like narrator. The "Carpenter's Tales" are written in a different, more serious tone: a craftsman, a village elder, shares the secrets of his craft, reminiscing about his years, all his sorrows and joys. Finally, the film novella "The Dawns Kiss," adapted for the screen by the renowned actor Sergei Nikonenko, is the humorous adventures of three fellow villagers in the city, where they experience the feeling of being outsiders and homeless. Whatever Belov wrote about, his works always echo faith in humanity, a unique, truly folksy, sly humor, and a love for the unassuming beauty of the Russian North.
